Another time, while everyone else ordered pizza we found ready made pizza crust by Schar, and got all the fixings to make pizza. It was delicious! When people ask me how I can stand this diet, I always tell them I really don't mind it, it's very easy to deal with. Except pizza, I really miss pizza. But this pizza satisfied all my cravings! I just used pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, oregano, and pepper. And it was so quick! took about 15 minutes, and it was ready to eat! I am definitely going to find a store with Schar products near me, there is a store locator in the US portion of the website.
I just found a completely gluten free store while going for a walk the other day. I haven't visited it yet, they are only open 2 days a week and only for a couple hours a day, so it has been tricky catching them. As soon as I do visit, I will fill you all in!
Also it isn't too difficult to eat out here. Most of the waiters and chefs speak English, and if not thankfully my sister-in-law knows exactly how to explain my allergy. And going out on the town? Of course there are the mixed drinks where we can't go wrong - bring on the rum and tequila shots! But if you are just going out for a "beer" almost all the bars carry Somersby cider - apple or pear, and they are delicious!
Speaking of eating out... I heard that back in the US my "home city" of Boston has a newly gluten-free friendly restaurant in the North End - so Italian lovers rejoice! I hear they have gluten-free fried calamari - I cannot wait to try it out! Check out Nebo, www.nebopizzaria.com it doesn't say anything about it on their website (tisk, tisk) but it's the truth, just get their address and head on down!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteDo you know any restaurants in Copenhagan that have gluten free menu items? I was wondering if you also have the name or address of the gluten free store that you found? Thanks!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteThere are many restaurants that have gluten free options, I've found that many servers and chefs are well aware of gluten allergies and are able to tell you which items are safe to order. Most Indian, Thai, and Vietnamese restaurants are almost completely gluten free, except for the breads, but double check on the spring rolls at the Vietnamese restuarants, some are made with rice paper, but some are not. Most of the cafes have salads and nachos and you can order sandwiches and burgers without the bread.
Last year we went to FAMO on Gammel Kongeveg, it's an Italian, higher-end restaurant with a fixed menu. When we made the reservation we informed them of my allergy and when we arrived they had the menu already adjusted for me, so that I was enjoying (almost) everything my family had! If its in your price range, I would highly recommend it!
The gluten free store is on Rosenorns Alle in Frederiksberg, you can also visit their website: www.special-foods.dk. sadly I have yet to visit the store, but you can make purchases online.
You can also find a lot of gluten free options at most of the larger Irmas, and there are other specialty health food stores throughout the city that carry it as well.
Please let me know if this helps at all and if you have any more questions! Thanks for reading!
Somersby cider, how I miss thee.
ReplyDelete**sigh** ...have yet to find where to get some in the U.S.

Is Somersby cider glutenfree?
ReplyDeleteYes!
ReplyDeleteI know it's now 2011, but I just bought a Somersby cider and I went on google translate to see what each ingredient was. It happens to have barley malt extract (kornmaltextrakt)... I'm a tad disappointed by this :( May I ask where you saw it was gluten-free?
ReplyDeleteThat must be new, because it used to say right on the can suitable for celiacs.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had Somersby in a long time - since I discovered English cider and decided Somersby was way too sweet - so I'm a little out of touch with whether or not it's gluten free.
